Chapter Seven

They reached Berren on a cold, rainy, windy day, soaked to the bone and completely fed up with life. Thunder cracked and boomed so often it had given him a headache, and all the blinding lightning hadn't helped. He'd never been so happy to see buildings come into sight in his life.

Better still, they had rooms at a remarkably fine hotel, the kind even Massy would never have chosen on his own, ready and waiting for them upon arrival. They stripped down in a special room made for such things, shrugged into soft, warm robes, and left the staff to haul all their belongings up once doing so wouldn't leave mud and water everywhere.

"I could definitely get used to this," Massy said as he sank into a cozy chair with a groan. "I was always spoiled rotten, but this is a completely different thing."

Kalwick rolled his eyes, then smiled at and dismissed the woman who'd been waiting to see what they needed. Baths and food, the most crucial elements at the end of any journey before beginning a new one.

Now they'd reached Berren, Massy's attention was shifting wholly to Corinna. Hopefully this was all one big misunderstanding, and she was perfectly fine. The sooner they learned that, the better. Once he was fed, clean, and ready, off he would go to get soaked and dirty again. Whatever it took.

Rest. Don't forget that, Tempest said. You really are just like your father in so many ways. You'll get nowhere if you don't have proper rest.

"Fine, fine," Massy muttered. "I'll just tell Corinna 'sorry darling, we worried you were in trouble, but we had to take a good, long nap first.' Great plan."

"Oh, you're getting the 'you need rest' lecture too," Kalwick said as he stretched and prowled the room restlessly.

Amawick rolled her eyes. "We do need rest, and there's also the small matter of reading that pile of papers sent by Lords Creawick and Tokiwick."

"That doesn't have anything to do with Corinna," Massy replied.

"I'll still be happier reading up while I can and being prepared for all possibilities," Amawick said. "This whole cult thing is prickling the back of my neck. The more I know, the better I'll feel. We'll refresh ourselves, read up, and then go speak with Corinna's family. Hopefully this whole trip was for nothing, and we can focus entirely on this bizarre cult problem we've stumbled into. So sit your impatient asses down."

"I'm already sitting," Massy retorted, and grinned at the scathing look that got him.

Kalwick remained standing, but he did stop prowling as he reached a window, scowling out at the storm. Every now and then he muttered something too low to catch, clearly a conversation with Striker.

Massy waited impatiently for the food and baths, which thankfully came a few minutes later. After an hour or so, he felt awake and capable again. "So what do the papers have to tell us?"

Amawick didn't look up from her reading and note taking, her sandwich only half-eaten. "It was called the Order of the Hallowed Ground.
